Old Spanish Days Entry in the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade!
The Old Spanish Days Fiesta of Santa Barbara entry in the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade recreated an historic wedding party. It features a carriage pulled by four Belgian draft horses (17.5 hands high!), bride and groom on a horse, the parents of the bride on horses, and her friends dancing alongside the carriage.
Old Spanish Days Fiesta in Santa Barbara is an annual 5-day festival that celebrates the spirit of the Rancho Period of California in the nineteenth century. We highlight the Californios’ extraordinary horsemanship, renowned hospitality and love of dance.
The Old Spanish Days entry recreated the most famous wedding in all of California history. This was the wedding of Anita de la Guerra of Santa Barbara to Boston hides trader Alfred Robinson. This wedding was chronicled in Richard Henry Dana’s book “Two Years Before the Mast.” Old Spanish Days reenacted this wedding party traveling from the Old Mission in Santa Barbara to the reception at Casa de la Guerra.
The early California weddings were a charming sight — the best horses were bedecked with flowers and decorations, and guests were beautifully attired. As seen here, it was the custom for the bride and groom to ride together.
